Autoflower Basics
What are autoflowers?
Autoflower strains contain Cannabis ruderalis genetics, which means they flower based on age rather than light cycle. This makes them faster (typically 10-14 weeks seed-to-harvest), more compact, and much more forgiving for beginners.
Ruderalis genetics
Cannabis ruderalis originates from Central Asia and Eastern Europe where it developed its auto-flowering ability to cope with short summers. Today's autoflowers are F1 or F2+ crosses of ruderalis with high-quality Indica/Sativa strains, combining the ease of auto-flowering with the potency and flavor of premium genetics.
Auto vs. Photoperiod
Photoperiod strains require a 12/12 light cycle to trigger flowering. Autoflowers flower automatically after 3-5 weeks regardless of light schedule. This means: no light-period changes needed, faster harvests, and the possibility to run different strains simultaneously.
Germination
The glass-water method
Place seeds in a glass of water at room temperature (22-25°C) for 12-24 hours. The seeds should sink to the bottom within this time. Once the taproot is 2-5mm long, carefully transfer to your substrate.
Substrate and first pot
For autoflowers, start directly in the final container (3-5L for smaller strains, 7-10L for larger). A light, well-draining substrate with low initial nutrients is ideal. Pre-soak the soil and make a small hole (1-2cm) for the seed.
Common mistakes
Overwatering is the most common beginner mistake. The substrate should be moist, not waterlogged. Only water the area directly around the seedling. Keep temperatures between 22-26°C and humidity at 65-70% during seedling stage.
Lighting & Pots
Light intensity: PPFD and DLI
For autoflowers, target 400-600 PPFD during seedling (first 2 weeks), ramping up to 800-1000 PPFD during vegetative and 1000-1200+ PPFD during flowering. A 20/4 or 18/6 light schedule works well throughout.
LED vs HPS vs CMH
Modern full-spectrum LED panels are the best choice for home growers: energy efficient, low heat, excellent spectrum. HPS gives good yields but runs hot. CMH offers great spectrum similar to natural light and is a good middle ground.
Fabric pots
Fabric pots prevent overwatering by allowing air pruning of roots and better oxygen exchange. They also prevent root circling. 3-5L for compact autoflowers, 7-10L for vigorous strains like Gorilla Skittlez or SSH.
Nutrients & Watering
NPK basics
Nitrogen (N) drives vegetative growth, Phosphorus (P) supports root and flower development, Potassium (K) aids overall plant health and bud density. During veg use a higher N ratio; during flowering shift toward P and K.
EC and pH management
pH should stay at 6.0-6.5 in soil (5.5-6.2 in coco/hydro). EC during seedling: 0.4-0.8, veg: 1.0-1.4, early flower: 1.4-1.8, late flower: 1.8-2.2, flush: EC below 0.5. Always measure both going in and in your runoff.
Organic vs. mineral nutrients
Organic nutrients (worm castings, bat guano, fish emulsion) build a living soil with beneficial microbes and are more forgiving. Mineral nutrients give precise control and faster results but have a smaller margin for error. Both work well for autoflowers.
LST & Training
LST (Low Stress Training) for autos
Unlike photoperiods, autoflowers should not be topped or FIMmed because they have a fixed life cycle and cannot recover lost time. LST is the ideal technique: gently bend and tie down the main stem and branches to create an even canopy and expose more bud sites to light.
Step-by-step LST
Start LST at week 2-3 when the plant has 4-5 nodes. Gently bend the main stem away from center using soft ties. As new growth emerges, continue training to maintain a flat, even canopy. Keep topping stems horizontal, not vertical.
Light defoliation
Remove fan leaves that are blocking lower bud sites during weeks 3-5. Remove no more than 15-20% of fan leaves at once. Leave fan leaves that are getting direct light as they power photosynthesis. Less is more with autoflowers.
Harvest, Dry & Cure
Trichome assessment
The most reliable harvest indicator: use a 60-100x loupe or jeweler's loop to examine trichomes. Clear = too early. Milky white = peak THC, energetic effect. Amber = THC degrading to CBN, more relaxing/sedative effect. Most prefer 70-90% milky with some amber.
Slow dry
After harvest, trim and hang branches upside down in a dark space at 15-18°C and 45-55% humidity. Aim for a 10-14 day dry. Too fast = harsh smoke and hay smell. Too slow = risk of mould. The stem should snap, not bend, when ready.
Curing
Cure in sealed glass jars at 62% humidity (use Boveda packs). Open jars once or twice daily for the first week to release moisture. After 2 weeks the smell should transform from green/chlorophyll to the strain's true terpene profile. 4-8 weeks for premium results.
Common Mistakes
Overwatering
The most common mistake. Signs: drooping leaves, slow growth, yellowing. Allow the top 2-3cm of soil to dry out before watering again. Lift the pot — if it's light, water; if heavy, wait. Autoflowers prefer slightly dry conditions over wet.
pH fluctuations
Incorrect pH locks out nutrients even when they are present. Test every watering. If you see interveinal chlorosis, check pH first. A simple soil pH meter or digital pH pen will save your grow.
Nutrient burn and deficiency
Brown/crispy leaf tips = too many nutrients (nutrient burn). Reduce EC and flush. Yellow leaves from bottom up = nitrogen deficiency. Yellow between veins = likely magnesium deficiency. Always diagnose before treating.
